Press Release 04 March 2008
Exciting news for any bride-to-be who can make it to the City of London next month. Award-winning bridal couturier Melanie Potro is holding her eagerly awaited sample sale from the 15-17 March and with reductions of up to 70%, it’s a chance to find the dress that dreams are made of at a price that... well.... only usually exists in dreams!
If you have your heart set on a not-so-traditional wedding gown that fits beautifully — skimming over your body to accentuate its curves — while oozing more than a touch of Hollywood glamour, book an appointment with Melanie now. With prices starting at a very tempting £500, it’s an opportunity not to be missed.
While in her Clerkenwell studio, agonising over which of the stunning dresses is “the one”, you might like to take a peek at some of her new designs for 2008 and even consider the option of a made-to-measure gown. The additions to the collection explore new silhouettes and details, such as fishtail hems, V-necklines, intricate soft pink floral embroidery and all-over or placed corded Chantilly lace — with silks and laces sourced from around the world.
Drawing on over 15 years’ experience in couture — specialising in figure-flattering corsetry — Melanie not only pays particular attention to fit, but also has an innate understanding of what the modern bride is looking for. Her knowledge, patience and empathy come together to make the whole experience of being fitted for a wedding dress a pleasure.
The bride’s input into the finished creation is also a vital element of the process — a tweak of a neckline here, a change of colour for a belt there.... Occasionally a dress can require even more radical alterations: for instance if the bride is pregnant — the challenge being to adapt the dress to the transforming body shape.
Melanie’s sensitivity to the wishes and whims of brides comes not only from experience, but also her interest in different cultures as well as ethnic and religious backgrounds. Her clients hail from such far-flung parts of the globe as New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and America (as well as the UK and Europe) and she has often found herself carefully packaging a gown to be shipped to the other side of the world — a service she is now a specialist advisor in.
“Sometimes I see a bride from one end of the world, who is marrying someone from the other, like Australia and Germany or Namibia and England,” she explains. “And since my father is from Goa and my mother is German, I like to see this cultural mix and how people can adapt and integrate both families in the ceremony.”
The wedding dresses in the Sample Sale are in sizes 10,12 and 14 and can be altered by request.
For those who missed me in the BBC3 documentary “Don’t tell the Bride...“, there will be a repeat this spring.
